More or less
Designed in France, Made in China
Fren-tsik, that's what happens when French chic meets Chinese ingenuity. The Alcatel OT-C651 is all about getting more for what you paid for.
For starters, it's perfectly designed for girls whose fingers love playing with keypads. It's also easy enough to use without reading the manual. As far as memory goes, its inbox can only store up to 50 messages. The only way you'll know you've maxed its capacity is a little red envelope at the top of the screen. The UI takes some getting used to when composing SMS but only because the orientation isn't like the oh-so-popular Nokias or Sony Ericssons. The directional keys do make navigation less strenuous, but scrolling through messages can be a bit tedious. We had to wait for a full second before it went to the next message.
At a price of just a little over six grand it may have MMS and a VGA camera that does videos, but it isn't anything to get your panties in a bunch. Pictures are either overexposed, or, in dim lighting, are dark and blurry. If you're particular about sounds, this one has no irritating pitch to rant about. Polyphonic melodies are pleasant. So pleasant in fact that when you're in a crowded place, message alerts set at maximum volume still get drowned out. The choice of ring tones isn't fabulous but you're given free and unlimited downloadables – including video clips, at Alcatel's website. That's the consolation you get with this Chinese-made product. For the price, it's a real bargain. Susan Leonardo
