Et Tu Q?
Business as Usual
With design cues taken from a RAZR2, the Moto Q9 is unarguably a classy number for a business phone. The Q9 has a few significant hardware upgrades from its predecessor, the Q8; the most obvious of which is the reworked keypad. For the most part, it's quite a welcome improvement from the tic tac-shaped keys of the Q8. There's also the addition of dedicated buttons for calendar, contacts, and Internet. There are no gaps between the squarish keys so there's less likelihood of a mistype.
The Q9 uses Windows Mobile 6 Standard with little or no customization from Motorola. An interesting departure is an inclusion of an Opera web browser as the default. For heavy emailers, another welcome addition is the Blackberry compatibility. Assuming that you have the service, this is one of the few locally available phones that can pinch hit for a RIM device. While the HSDPA connectivity is a useful upgrade, it's puzzling that Moto left out Wi-Fi, which is fast becoming a standard on other WinMo phones. Forget video calls, too since there's no front cam. We're extremely baffled why the data/power connector has been changed to a proprietary design from the standard mini USB jack found on the Q8.
As mentioned earlier, the Q9 is similar to a RAZR2 in terms of design, minus the slim profile, of course. Despite being somewhat chunky, the rounded corners give it a more ergonomic feel. The hardware is solid, but Moto should've added more features to make it equal, if not superior to its smartphone peers. Ed Geronia
