MOBILE PHONE
Moto ROKR E8

If it weren't for its backlight, the Motorola ROKR E8 wouldn't look like a mobile phone at all – simply because you can't see its keys. The smooth, glossy (smudge-prone) front housing will elicit curious – and envious – glances because it undeniably looks good.

The corresponding keys light up when in use (music controls when in player mode, a numeric keypad when in phone mode) and though its smooth surface doesn't equate to a touch-sensitive interface, its "invisible" buttons feature haptics, a tactile sensation that makes them vibrate with every press. It also has a scroll toggle – a "click wheel" of sorts.

Standard 3.5mm earphones can be used to listen to music, which boost sound quality if you've got a superior set of cans. The ROKR E8's player is compatible with Windows Media 11 (sorry, Mac users) and has a user-friendly interface. One of our niggles about the music phone is, ironically, its fancy scroll wheel. While listening to music, you tend to use the scroll to adjust volume, whereas handling its sensitive toggle rewinds and fast-forwards tracks instead.

The ROKR E8 also has a built-in 2-megapixel camera, which captures decent shots – provided there is ample light, as there's no flash.

On the whole, the ROKR E8 functions well as a music phone, thanks to its MP3 player-like interface and standard earphone jack – provided you're a Windows user, that is. Chrissy D. Icamina

WE SAY Call us superficial, but it earns two thumbs-up just for its looks. Its music player isn't too shabby either.
