MOBILE PHONE
NOKIA 3230  | P23,000 |
So clever it could rank on top of its class - in Finland, that is

Smart is an understatement for the Nokia 3230. It's packed with useful features, plus clever new tools you never thought you'd need in a mobile phone.

The list of features is impressive: The large-screen high-resolution display boasts of 65,536 colors. The built-in 1.3 megapixel camera shoots better and clearer photos while the video recorder and player allows you to make your own "muvees" and one-hour videos. The movie director application will make you feel like Spielberg with its special effects, background music, and graphics manipulation.

This phone can rub elbows with just about anybody with its complete connectivity - Bluetooth, infrared, and Pop-port via USB. Your PC and 3230 will become best buddies as you create and synchronize images, ringtones, contacts and other files via the Nokia PC Suite. Downloading and messaging is a snap, but the closely packed keypad needs some getting used to.

This 3230 isn't all serious though. It comes with fun games, such as the Atari-like Warrior and the action-packed Agent V that uses the camera viewer and motion sensor. Not only that, you can even challenge other players in Rally Pro via Bluetooth. No need to buy tokens for those crummy arcades - you have your own multiplayer racing game in the palm of your hand.

Tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900. 65,536-color, 176x208 pixel TFT display. 1.3-megapixel camera. Movie Director and Real Player. Virtual Radio that plays FM radio stations. Push-to-talk over cellular capable. Bluetooth, infrared and Pop-port (USB). Wireless multiplayer games. SMS, MMS, Chat, Instant Messaging, and GPRS capable.
Rich in features, the Nokia 3230 is a tempting feast for tech-savvy phone hunters.
Music is not a problem, thanks to its digital music player that supports MP3, AAC, and WAV files. The tunes are crisp, thanks to its 48-layer polyphonic sound. You can play the stereo FM radio over your headset, or through a loudspeaker if you want to show off. And the songs can keep playing even while you're texting or browsing the phone.

The 3230 also uses one of Nokia's newest features - Visual Radio. This feature allows you to interact with your favorite radio stations. While listening to a song, you can find out the singer's name, the title of the song, and other info simply by browsing the screen. It's too bad that the full feature of the Visual Radio isn't available in our country yet. You'll have to settle for listening to FM stations without the interactive menu. But if you really want to try out the Visual Radio, then take the tri-band 3230 to Finland.

Another fresh feature is PTT or push-to-talk over cellular. You can start feeling like 007 as you converse with owners of other PTT-enable phones a la walkie-talkie. Too bad only James Bond can use this feature. It isn't available in our country yet. Again, try it in Finland.

With all the 3230's rich features, why wasn't the 3230 endowed with Einstein-like memory? It has only 6MB of internal expandable memory and a 32MB memory card - much lower than other preceding Nokia units. Oh well, you can always purchase a bigger memory card.

Musically inclined, creative, smart and feature-packed, the 3230 is one heck of a mobile phone. Let's just hope our telecom companies update their technology so that we can actually put the PTT and Visual Radio to good use. - Kate Alvarez
