MOBILE PHONE
Aural persona
For the music junkie

In human years, gadgetry is a teener by now, suffering identity crisis and experimenting like crazy. There's Apple, adjusting as a phone maker. And there's Nokia, going into full music mode. They launched the 5310 Xpress Music as a music player first and a phone, second.

It's a claim that will raise eyebrows. But the 5310 will just as easily bring them down. On the outside, it's anorexic-sleek and rather too smooth to the touch. It's a fine-looking pho, erm, music player. But more importantly, it is a fine, fine music player.

Nokia did the right thing placing music buttons on the left hand-side of the stellar 2-inch screen, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It's a drag-and-drop heaven so transferring files is a breeze. Make sure you've all your wires, though, as it can't work on old Nokia cables.

With an SD card slot for up to 4GB cards, the 5310 can hold up to 8GB of music. That's, let's see, trekking up the iPhone memory territory! It also has an FM radio, for just in case. At 9.9mm thickness, it's brimful of media madness: video recorder, net capabilities, a still 2MP cam. But you must choose your poison. Play with the cam and music stops. The speakers are dodgy but plug in your cans and you'll soon enjoy an intimate poetry reading from Ginsberg.

This role-swapping thing, it's all good. The kids are having fun, the consumers are kept entertained. Lou E. Albano

WE SAY Nokia could’ve launched this minus the phone bit. It’s that solid as a DAP.
