MOBILE PHONE
The Chevy Suburban of mobile phones
Far from being a sleek, sexy slide phone, the Nokia 6270 is a macho handset loaded with heavy-duty features. Two-megapixel camera with flash, high-contrast 320 x 240-pixel display, and stereo speakers with surround effect – they make the hefty 125-gram package worth the extra bulge in the pocket.
Its two-megapixel camera captures amazing detail and color. Even without using the flash – which works up to one and a half meters away – the Nokia 6270's images are crisp and vibrant in dim interiors.
Taking photos is possible without having to slide the unit open, as there's a camera hot key at the lower side. And since its photos are print-worthy, using the 6270 like a bona fide digital camera is encouraged, too; images are captured in landscape mode, using the hot key itself as the capture button.
The detail of captured images is easy to make out not just when transferred to a PC, but also on the 6270's brilliant 4.5 x 4cm screen. The dazzling display also features a customizable active display, which allows you to view application icons and calendar entries while on standby mode. And even under direct sunlight, the smallest sized font on the unit's screen is still discernible.
The 6270's beefy 104 x 50 x 23mm package also intimidates smaller phones with its booming voice and its stereo speakers. With a speaker on either side of the phone, you can actually hear melodies travel from one side to another – and those are just the ringtones! Listening to MP3 tracks via its clear loudspeaker is pleasing to the ear, notwithstanding its built-in equalizer and 3D sound control. Buyers will want to maximize use of its integrated MiniSD card slot, which can support a 1GB MiniSD card filled with your favorite tunes.

If mobile phones were automobiles, most smartphones would be luxury cars. As for the 6270, though, it's a Hummer – if not a ten-wheeler truck. It's no sexy package, as most slide phones are. Its burly industrial looks, “boxy” metallic housing, and large keys seem built for heavy use. Ironically, though, it's an SUV that you know is capable of heavy-duty use, but still you wouldn't drive it on rough terrain for fear of getting it dirty; the phone's matte housing and chrome trims are quite prone to marks and scratches.
On the whole, the Nokia 6270 is a feast for the senses. Sure, the sense of touch will confirm that it's bulky, but the sense of sight and hearing are given a treat with its superior images (both from its display as well as its camera) and sound. - Chrissy D. Icamina
