MOBILE PHONE
Along came a slider
Nokia's latest itsy-bitsy 3G phone

Nokia's new arrival may slide like the 6270, but it foregoes quad band functionality for a tri-band GSM/3G combo. They've also managed to trim some fat from the 6280, making for a nice, compact package.

Similar to the 6270, the 6280 sports Nokia's improved Series 40 interface. Customizable menu options and themes let you tweak the interface to your heart's content, and the bright 320 x 240 pixel LCD is a revelation. The whole package works remarkably well, and the 6280 just zips through apps, with hardly any lag. What's more remarkable is that the 6280 has just 6MB of onboard RAM. A 64MB miniSD card (up to 2GB) is included to supplement this, which is a boon considering the phone has a strong multimedia featureset, headlined by a 2-megapixel camera.

It takes just a second or two for the LCD to turn into a camera viewfinder once you've pressed the shortcut button, and photos were quite good – but not quite as sharp as that of a K750i or even an N70. The front mounted camera is solely for video calls, and image quality was nothing to phone home about – so make sure you've got ample lighting .

Probably our only gripe is the sliding mechanism. Our review unit exhibited some lateral play with the slide open. The mechanism's durability could be concern in the long run.

Despite that, we think the 6280 strikes the perfect balance between price and performance, relative to the other 3G offerings our there. Nokia has aggressively positioned this mobile at the “sweet-spot” price point – kind of like having sugar with your curds and whey. JayJ Ramos

If you don’t need the 3G functionality, the Nokia 6270 still deserves a look. Aside from having the same form factor, it’s also a quad-band phone, with a 2MP camera, and 3D stereo speakers in a slightly larger casing.
