All the excuses to buy a phone for its looks

The Nokia 6300 is a paradox. With its sophisticated and solid steel casing, it exudes high-end appeal – though it's targeted firmly at the middle of the market. It's slender without being flimsy. Its keys aren't too small and it's got a dazzling, large display to boot.

When it comes to features, the 6300 goes beyond what most mid-range phones have. Even without a built-in photo-light, its two-megapixel camera doesn't disappoint. The night function is enough to compensate for the lack of light and is still able to draw out rich colors in dark conditions. Although there's a bit of noise once images are transferred to a computer, photos look crisp when viewed using its brilliant display.

Despite its small housing, sound output is loud enough for polyphonic alert tones or MP3s. Audiophiles may be turned off listening to music using its loudspeaker, but its stereo FM radio is a breath of fresh air. The phone also supports stereo Bluetooth music playback, a.k.a. A2DP.

The 6300 runs using the Series 40 user interface. Speed is not an issue either, as it runs features almost without delay. Its memory is expandable as well, with its hot-swappable microSD card slot, although you have to slide off the back cover to access the card slot. (The phone comes with a 128MB memory card, which isn't much nowadays.)

Heavy users may panic at the battery indicator, though, which seems to bleed itself dry quickly. But a full charge is more than enough for a busy day of calling and sending SMS messages as long as you're wary of using its loudspeaker too much. The unit also doesn't seem too keen on phone conversations longer than five minutes long, as lengthy phone calls seem to heat up the unit.

But overall, the Nokia 6300 lives up to the hype its fine-looking façade stirs up. It's sleek, solid, sophisticated, and above all, it has the smarts to make it a mid-range model that could give some higher-end non-3G models a run for their money. Chrissy D. Icamina

NOKIA 6300

In detail
The 6300 is one of Nokia's first attempts in making a slim phone. If this is a peek at things to come, other slim phone makers should take heed.
