MOBILE PHONE
TV to go
Here's an N-series phone you won't soon forget

When the Nokia 7650 was first released, people were drooling at its groundbreaking built-in camera, never mind how unwieldy it was. Tinkering with the Nokia N92 evokes such feelings.

The swivel-jointed clamshell is chock-full of features—and by "chock-full" we mean bulky. But no one would give much thought to these matters. It's the DVB-H receiver (mobile counterpart of a TV antenna) that makes it one to watch for.

Twist the phone one way and it activates the still and video cam, and another in landscape mode, ideal for TV viewing. The keypad is also designed to allow regular phone features to work in landscape mode.

As for the TV function, once you've a network SIM that supports mobile Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) or Internet Protocol Datacast (IPDC), watching live programs is clearer than expected, thanks to the phone's anti-glare display. It's only the TV reception that affects the clarity of viewing, just like any TV that relies on an antenna, although the signal fluctuates mostly when one's in the basement level or a plane is flying above.

Though overwhelmed by its TV, its other features shouldn't be overlooked. Truly a smart phone, it supports major Office files and is Wi-Fi enabled. This means virtually no room left for boredom: while away the time surfing the Net through its Apple WebCore based browser or watching TV.

The N92's IPTV/IPDC support may come across as a novelty for some, but wasn't that the same impression the Nokia 7650 made when it came out with a camera? If portable music players have video as a plus point, live TV must have the same effect on mobile phones. Though the phone's size may eventually become an issue, the N92 will remain one of the standout N-series units (if not across mobile phone brands) because of a remarkable innovation—at a price lower than the 7650's when it was debuted in the market. "IPTV" is actually a registered US trademark owned first by Precept Software, Inc. and now by Cisco Systems, Inc. The Digital Video Broadcast Project's (DVB) equivalent for IP datacast or IPTV is DVB-IPDC.
