MOBILE PHONE
Philips Xenium 9@9k

At first, everything seems so-so with the Philips Xenium 9@9k. Its housing is small, but not that slim. It's got a colored screen, which isn't rich enough. It has a camera, but is only standard VGA. It's a basic phone that takes a stab at the mid-range market – or is it an entry-level phone that provides beyond the basics?

As the cliché goes, don't judge this phone by its cover because it won't reveal what its selling point really is: phenomenal battery life. It boasts of up to two months of standby time, which purges the world of "I'm low-batt!" excuses.

One of its nifty features is the auto power-on/off feature that allows the phone to automatically switch on or off at a prescribed time, which is ironic because with its extended battery life, there's practically no need to save power. It would've been more helpful, though, if the phone had a battery meter that tells how many percent of its power has been used up. For now, one has to be content with the standard battery meter divided into five bars – that's around 12 days worth of power per bar.

As for its imaging functions, one can only expect so much from a VGA camera, though it must be said that photos looked better on a PC than on the phone's average OLED. You can sync the phone to a computer through its included software but forget about it if you're running Vista or OSX.

Think of the Xenium 9@9k as a basic handset that's got all the essentials covered – exceptional battery life, most especially. Chrissy D. Icamina

PHILPS XENIUM 9@9k

Did you know?
In October 2001, eight backpackers in the Jinggang mountains in China were lost for 80 hours. Fortunately, one of them had brought a Xenium phone and twenty hours later they were brought to safety with the use of an SMS exchange that led the rescue team to the lost group.
