Between K and P, there is M
Mid-range price, high-end features
In an uncharacteristic tactic, Sony Ericsson has decided to diversify their new mobiles. The M600i is the first mid-level smart phone that they have ever released. Aptly named, the M series of phones is situated right in the middle of their existing K and P series.
It doesn't scream smart phone like HTC's Dopods, but don't be fooled by its simple, flattened-by-a-Love-Bus design. The M600i is armed with a unique rocker QWERTY keypad. There's a slight learning curve involved, but it's well worth the extra effort. If the keypad isn't quite your cup of tea, then there is always the handwriting recognition software.
This lean, green, mobile office machine has everything the early adoptor/mobile warrior needs. QuickOffice can open almost any file Microsoft can dish out, from Word, to Power Point, to Excel. And as a bonus, it even comes bundled with a PDF reader. The new and improved Opera web browser is fast, and rightfully so, since it needs to keep up with 3G mobile Internet speeds.
Setting up and synching with your desktop - especially Outlook - is as simple as breathing. Even configuring this puppy for mobile web, push e-mail, and MMS is as easy as logging onto sonyericsson.com and registering. An install file will be sent straight to the M600i and voila! Instant connectivity.
Unlike the P990i, there's no built-in camera and Wi-Fi. This may be a deal breaker for some, but for true business users the camera is negligible and Wi-Fi is the ultimate battery guzzler. Meanwhile, compared to its Walkman brethren, the M600i's multimedia capabilities are not as full featured, but they get the job done. The limitations are not hardware related - the touch screen is beautiful and video playback is solid - but more to suit Sony's diversification stratagem so as not to eat into the market of its multimedia counterparts.
