SE goes slim, Jim
Like the candybar, clamshell, and slider, the slim phone is fast becoming a standard form factor offering from handset makers. The W880i is Sony Ericsson's latest iteration of its flagship Walkman model. Perhaps ‘supermodel' is the more appropriate term since the phone's wafer-thin dimensions is enough reason for baiting a catfight with Nokia's equally skinny 6300.
Next to the previous models such as the W800i and W810i, the W880i is a radical redesign. The front fascia comes in either stainless steel or black metal. The joystick has been replaced by a circular 5-way d-pad. Next to the slim chassis, the keypad has been unnecessarily reduced to evenly-spaced elongated studs. This makes texting on the new keypad a rather hit and miss affair since it may require equally petite thumbs to operate properly. Speaking of the camera, the unit takes a step back by having a rear 2-megapixel snapper without the auto focus feature. Don't expect pics to look as good as those from a W800i or a K750i.
On the music side of things, the W880i lives up to its Walkman name. Like the W850i, it's loaded with version 2.0 of the Walkman player. The software is much improved in terms of its functionality and interface. It's all rather slick and even displays album art. A2DP is also much appreciated this full-featured music phone. When it comes to the W880i's 3G, browsing, online and organizer features, they're all as good as Sony Ericsson's other premium phones such as the W850i and K800i. Jerome Cordero Garcia

Although it's not a 3G phone, the Nokia's superslim 6300 makes up for it with its excellent 2.5G features. Its series 40 Symbian OS means that it's fast and fully functional like its 3G brother, the Nokia 6233.
