Nobody likes a show-off. But with the Sony Ericsson Z800, we couldn’t help bragging about this 3G flip phone everywhere we went. The impressive design was just the tip of the iceberg; we have tons more to say about this mobile phone.
Even though 3G is still unavailable in the country (stop taking your time, mobile networks!), the 3G capability of the Sony Ericsson Z800 isn’t the be-all and end-all of its existence. First, the sleek and stylish look of the phone distracted people. From the corners of our eyes, we noticed that passersby kept staring at us. Like something was growing out of our ears! We then realized that it was just the phone glued to side of our face as we yakked away. Second, the multi-directional 1.3-megapixel camera mimicked a manyak’s wandering eye. We recorded videos and took pictures from every possible angle with a simple flick of the “Motion Eye” camera. Even with this clamshell phone in the closed position, its camera was fully functional and the 65k-color external LCD showed us what we took, which was perfect for “discreet” snapshots on the go. Third, the pre-installed 3D game, Super Real Tennis, seemed pretty real to us thanks to the vivid 262k-color LCD. Last but not least, the phone’s MP3 player came fully equipped with Sony Corporation’s MegaBass. Some of you may remember that neat feature from Walkman days.

Go ahead, show it off! Just don’t forget to wear something, anything, once 3G video calling is up and running.

The internal memory sucks though. With just 6MB, users will be forced to save up for a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo if they want to maximize the phone’s multimedia functions. The 32MB Memory Stick Duo that comes with the whole package just doesn’t cut it. The keypad is also something we couldn’t quite understand. There is an extra menu key which gets in the way when you type a text message. It was somewhat annoying because even before we could send out an SMS, an accidental push of the menu button would bring us back to – where else – the menu!
In the end, we decided that since you can’t change the ergonomics of the phone, you’ll just have to adjust. Any compromise with a phone as fine as the Sony Ericsson Z800 is worth it. - Maya Perez
