The light fantastic
DLP stands for "Dude, I Love this Projector!"
Three letters make this Acer stand out from the crowd. DLP – Digital Light Processing – a technology brought to us by the same Mensa folk who gave us the Speak-and-Spell, Texas Instruments. DLP is amazing stuff, and it shows in the vivid and crisp images the Acer pumped out. The Acer PR Spin Department rightfully says that you should expect “clear images, deep blacks and solid color contrast.” They weren't kidding.
We can't begin to describe the depth of the visual feast that greeted us each time we fired up the PD-100. Hooking up to a DVD player made us discover Band of Brothers all over again… with each bullet and blood splatter showing up in brilliant color. Plug in a PS2 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will burst into reality like a car crash. Even our trusty old laptop gave out unbelievably smart visuals (we tripped out on the Geiss visualization Winamp plug-in for about three hours). This was all done, mind you, on a loaned projector screen. We tried it out on ye-old-white-wall and things weren't as mind blowing, but that's the wall's fault, not the PD-100's.
One small thing we weren't too thrilled about was the heat the PD-100 radiated. Forget the tired old “you can cook an egg on it” cliché; this baby can pan-fry a steak. Proper placement is essential for ventilation. It's a good thing that the 2,000-hour bulb is user-replaceable, since improper installs will probably have you going through bulbs like they went out of fashion.
At the end of the day, the PD-100 is a viable option if you're shopping around for a good display. The DLP rivals any non-HD LCD or Plasma screen out there, with a price that won't cost you as much. Peter de Guzman

The magic behind DLP is done with mirrors. The technology uses a spatial light modulator known as a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD). The DMD is a memory chip covered with hinged, microscopic electromechanical mirrors, one for each pixel on the screen.
