Canon FS11
Finally somebody didit: a flash memory based-camcorder with huge internal memory. We're still wiping the tears of joy from our face.
The Canon FS11 sits well with eager beavers who video tape anything and everything they point their camcorders at. The built-in 16GB flash memory is more than enough for three and a half hours of DVD-quality footage. And if you need more room, you can always stick in an SD card for instant expansion.
It's all good really, but there is one major bone we have to pick with this shooter. Unlike most modern camcorders, the FS11 requires you to plug the unit into a power socket when connecting to a PC, regardless of how much power you still have left in the battery. Yes, it's a simple task, but inexplicable seeing that you have the USB jack poking out of one side of the cam and the AC plug poking out of the other. Frankly, it makes the camera look like it's on life support.
Despite that, the FS11 is still a purchase-worthy camera. It's as light as and as small as a can of sardines, which is great for travelers and outdoor junkies. There's more than enough juice to get you through an hour and a half of shooting and playing back footage – unlike the HD and cassette ‘corders of yore that only let you shoot for an hour with the stock battery.
If you're finicky with your shots, the FS11 might not be for you. Indoor performance left us unimpressed. Powering up the LED lamp helps lighten things a bit but doesn't really do much. Still shots look like they were taken by a camera phone, but that's not such a big deal since this is a video camera. Elijah Mendoza

If you're still not satisfied with the built-in flash memory, you can always add more by popping in an SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) memory card.
