What's up, dock?
The Elmer and Bugs of music mobiles
Sure, everyone who has an iPod has one of them fancy iPod speaker docks. But mobile phone docks? It's an idea that's long overdue. It took the combined might of mobile phone accessory maker Jabra and speaker maestros Klipsch to produce the first viable mobile phone dock that we've seen. The idea is bound to create a cash cow for the gadget tandem, and mostly it delivers.
Design-wise, the Jabra Klipsch S5010 is worthy of the Apple boys from Cupertino. Its sleek black casing houses gorgeous sound, beating other similarly-sized iPod speaker docks. Like iPod speaker docks though, don't expect much in terms of left and right speaker separation; the speakers are too close to each other for that. There's ample boom for a small room, but if you live in a mansion, don't expect the sound to travel far. All told, we were impressed by the detail found in the sound reproduction.
The secret to being a good mobile phone speaker dock is in a selection of short wires that's thoughtfully provided for by Jabra Klipsch. There's a connector for Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung phones, and the connector can be hidden seamlessly within the dock's body. Setting it up though can be a mess of wires and rubber bit, but it's worth it in the end.
There's also a mini-stereo jack for generic MP3 players because yes, the Jabra Klipsch is really just a regular stereo with all the connectors you can name. You can plug in everything from your TV to your DVD player to your Creative Zen. Secret's out of the bag, sorry. No points subtracted for that clever little piece of engineering (and marketing). The problem of this speaker dock is in the price. At P8,800, there's no shortage of better-priced solutions. Alas, they're not speaker docks. JayJ Ramos
