Not just about size
But where you can use it
This year marks the tenth year that DVD, or digital versatile disc, was introduced to the video market. In our country the DVD revolution has been dramatic, thank in part to the *ahem* ingenuity of our Asian neighbors in producing affordable discs and players. Nextbase popped up in the middle of the pack, relatively unknown but with a firm brand identity.
Nextbase's specialty is making portable DVD players, the latest of which is the SDV-185. Nextbase certainly equipped it well enough. There's the player itself, a rather hefty (good for balance) tablet with an integrated 8.5-inch screen. There's a NiMh battery pack good for at least one long movie. An AC adapter and car cigarette socket adapter. And there's a slim card remote any red-blooded male will appreciate.
To show how car-friendly the player can be, a brace is included to mount the player on any car's headrest, so the rear occupants (a.k.a. impatient children) can be pacified with your home Pixar collection.
The player tablet is simple to operate. All the buttons are properly labeled, and the accessories are plug-and-play simple. Aside from playing video discs, the Nextbase accepts popular video files either burned on blank media or via a nifty USB slot on the side. As Borat would say, "Very nice."
It isn't perfect on all counts. There were some discs that wouldn't play or had difficulty playing on the Nextbase. And the device is a bit heavy, with far too much paraphernalia. And there's the price, which is a bit steep at P35,950. You can buy a 25-inch TV and a home DVD player for the same price. But if you love movies, hate traffic and travel a good deal, this is a good deal nonetheless.
Remember, the player may be pricey, but the cost of not hearing "Are we there yet?" from your brats is priceless. Dinzo Tabamo
