Hit that perfect beat, boy
With the coming of age of dance music, we’ve seen DJs sprout up like zits on a teenagers face. With DJ status now elevated to that of a rockstar, it’s no wonder why people have gone out of their way to try their hand in this burgeoning craft. But, DJ-ing – despite the simple concept of mixing two records together seamlessly – is not so simple as it sounds.
We reviewed the DJM-600, paired with a set of CDJ-800 decks, and these components seemed to complement each other perfectly. While the CDJ-800 throws some breakthrough technologies in the mix, the DJM-600, on the other hand, is no stranger in the DJ/Club circuit.
Often heralded as an industry standard, this unit comes close to being the perfect all-around mixer. Not much has changed from its predecessor, the DJM-500, except for the addition of a couple of effects here and there, a crossfader curve selector, and an advance in the monitoring system. Why? Simple. It already has everything. It’s DJ friendly, highly reliable, and sturdily built. Sound quality is up there. It can accommodate three turntables and three CD decks at a time, with four channels being aired simultaneously. Its BPM counter is good for the phonetically challenged. The effects are essential – a bit tricky to use at first, but with some practice, the application comes in naturally and will definitely be a factor in that way you think of mixing in songs. Frequency cuts and boosts are smooth and accurate, and cueing has been enhanced.

Thanks to Pioneer's experience in audio research, things are getting easier for aspiring mixmasters. It seems like Pioneer is on a mission to make a DJ out of anyone. That said, if you can only buy one mixer, this is what we’d recommend. - Cyril Yarisantos
