Tubular tunes
A music-pumping pipes
Within the test tube body of the S203 is a G-sensor pedometer. It’s so sophisticated that not only does it know how many calories and kilometers you’ve burned, it can also select songs to match the tempo of your pavement pounding.
In practice it works this way: you create two playlists for walking and running. The G-sensor detects if you are just strolling along and plays your walking tunes. Break in to a jog or run and the appropriate playlist starts. It’s like having your very own soundtrack for your workout.
The S203 is clearly targeted towards sports-minded individuals since it comes packed with an armband and sport-style earphones. Just in case you sweat too much or run into a light drizzle, the player’s water-resistant body will just shrug them off.
With the best audio performance, this is simple to use, too. A jog ring selects tracks and navigates menus on the bright two-line OLED display. It’s easily tweakable even when in an armband, without the need to take your eyes off the road—although it helps if you’re left-handed when checking the time, distance or calories burned, as the screen is only really visible when on your right arm.
As Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger roars out and makes you feel confident of the day’s workout, the only irritant is Sony’s SonicStage syncing software. Other than that, it’s nearly perfect. Migs Gerardo
