Portable prancing horsepower
Unlike its competitor, which carries the badge of a raging bull, the Acer Ferrari 1004WTMi doesn't seem to take its design cues from a specific car model. A good decision, we believe, on Acer's part since it avoids the common pitfall of co-branded design. The laptop doesn't try hard to look like something else. Instead there are several design touches that make it stand out on its own.
Carbon fiber is generously used on the laptop's lid and the CPU exhaust grille won't look out of place on a super car. There's an overall tactile feel to the laptop's chassis; even the battery has slip-proof grooves. Because of its compact dimensions, the Acer is very easy to hold in one hand, whether in closed or open position. It's one of the best-looking laptops we've seen this year, and if we were to judge based on looks alone, it easily brings home a gold award.
The dual-core Athlon Turion64 X2 CPU is no slouch compared to similar offerings in other laptops. The standard 1GB of RAM keeps everything running smoothly. Acer has chosen to stick with a more mature Windows XP for its included OS. While the rest of the hardware is meant for brute force computing, the ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 graphics chip is rather underpowered. We had trouble running Company of Heroes on the Acer at an acceptable frame rate.
Some laptops come with few extras. With the Acer, the included accessories are overflowing. Besides the leather laptop case, the laptop comes with a Ferrari-themed Bluetooth mouse, VOIP phone, cleaning cloth, DVD burner, and extra battery. With the exception of the battery, all the extras come with leather cases. Whether you're into Ferraris or not, the Acer is a formidable machine for taking on the road. Ed Geronia Jr.
