AIGO MP3 PLAYER U-WATCH  | P7,500 |
Dick Tracy never had it this good!

It would have been funny to see a watch like this ten years ago. You'd have had to slap a whole hard drive onto your wrist with a rubber strap dangling a full-on ATA cable to sync it with your PC. That thought makes the Aigo MP3 Player U-Watch even more amazing.

Playing music is what the U-Watch was obviously made for and it does this quite well. The included earbud-phones adequately recreate even the most dynamic sound sources. This does, of course, depend on what bit-rate your MP3s were ripped at, but anything encoded at "near-CD quality" (192kbps) comes out just fine. If packing in more music is your bag, then smaller 128kbps files are the way to go. Support for Microsoft's WMA audio files will also appeal to space-nazis since these generally sound better at lower bit rates than MP3s. Still, the player can hold up to an hour of music.

The U-Watch can't possibly play hours and hours of music solely through the juice provided by the watch's button batteries. To solve that problem, it includes a rechargeable battery that draws power off a PC's USB port. In all the watch has enough power to fill about 3 hours of your day with music - enough for most people's needs.

Supports MP3, WMA and ADPCM file formats, 128/256MB, Equalizer, Built-in microphone with ADPCM voice recording, 2.5mm stereo earphones jack, USB 1.1 port
It's a watch with a face not even its mother could love, but for the price it's going for, you get an MP3 player, a file storage device plus a workable watch!
The USB port itself is ingeniously integrated onto the watch's strap. It's hidden so well that you'll probably forget it's there until you need to refresh your portable music collection. To do that, simply pop that USB port into your desktop or laptop. If you're running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, then you don't even need to install drivers before doing so! Drag and drop, baby!

The plug and play feature leads us to another thing that the U-Watch can be used for: portable file storage. You can store your presentations, or even state secrets on the watch and simply bring it with you wherever you go. How's that for utility?

Finally the watch itself is non-descript. It's no masterpiece of Swiss precision engineering and it isn't pretty. At best it can be mistaken for a poor G-Shock knock off, but it does do its job. What's that, you might ask? Tell time, dummy! 'Nuff said.

So what's the big deal? There are iPods and Muvos that abound in the portable music scene. The U-Watch does them all better by taking portability to the next level. By integrating the MP3 player with a watch, the boys from Beijing have made music an even more integral part of your lifestyle. - Peter de Guzman
