Asus EEE PC 900
With Atom-powered subnotes slowly creeping in, the Asus EEE PC 900, seems to be more of an evolutionary step for the popular UMPC line. The huge 8.9-inch screen is definitely a welcome upgrade, as is the increase in SSD capacity. It's hard to imagine going back to the 701's cramped screen. To make way for the enlarged screen, the speakers on the lid have been moved to the main body. Despite the new placement, the speakers sound a bit richer.
Another welcome upgrade is the preinstalled Windows XP OS. Strangely, the Linux variant has a slightly bigger storage capacity. Still, we highly recommend slotting in at least an 8GB SD card since storage maxes out at 20GB.
Using the 901 gave us a sense of déjà vu. Apart from the screen, it's still fundamentally the same Eee PC from last year. It has the same chassis styling and the same cramped keyboard. Asus could have at least made a bigger right shift key and placed it where it normally belongs. The touchpad is a bit bigger but only slightly. A few months ago, we would have highly recommended the 900 for those looking for a new subnotebook. In the recent light of brand new Atom-powered subnotes, we might ask you to hold out on this one. Even if it's slightly better than the previous Eees. Ed Geronia Jr.
