Stevie Wonder's old song could not have put it any better, the Asus S6 simply embodies finesse and elegance in a leather clad chassis.
Out of the box, the new gadget smell of the Asus S6 is overwhelming. The leather skin gives out a fragrance that we could only describe as "rich". Everything from the color of the hide to the layout of the buttons is spot on. Build quality is solid and the overall look – better than any of Apple's offerings.
Performance-wise the S6 is a bit soft, but then again from its looks alone it's only hardcore when it comes to having a fashion sense. It's equipped with a brute Core 2 Duo processor, but all that power is reserved mostly for multimedia and office functions. Hardcore gamers might shun this laptop because doesn't have a separate video card, but still it doesn't mean it can't play games like World of Warcraft and Command & Conquer 3.
The S6 is small and very portable so it makes for a great video player. The screen is amazingly sharp and had no problem with fast-paced scenes from the Top Gear: Winter Olympics DVD. The experience is further boosted by the Windows Media Center program included in Windows Vista. Everything flows smooth as silk and there's hardly any lag in the user interface. If there's one problem though with the playback it's that the speakers are, well, good for nothing. Pumped up to full volume, you could barely hear anything – even in a quiet room. Even headphones won't do the trick; best hook it up to a set of PC speakers.
After two hours of straight use, we noticed something eery about the S6. The surface doesn't get hot, it gets warm - like human skin. Scary, but sexy, especially around the palm rest.
Asus' S6 is as light as they come. The small and widescreen form factor means it can fit in a small messenger bag although we strongly recommend you slide it into a real laptop bag – 135 grand isn't exactly cheap.
