PHOTO PRINTER
Point, Shoot, Print
Portable photo lab

The good thing about photo printers is that you don’t have to think twice about hauling your ass to a photo lab just to get a few measly prints done. The good thing about ultra-compact printers is that you can do this almost anywhere.

Sharing the same compact size and weight as its heavier, bigger, and more feature-laden brother, the CP730, the Canon Selphy CP720 is one to bring around even on long trips. Its most noticeable features are a 1.5-inch LCD screen where you can view pictures as well as navigate the menu with well-placed buttons, and controls simple enough for a child to operate. Then there are SD, CF, miniSD and MS card ports for reading data on the fly. There’s also a retractable cord for direct connection to Canon cameras and others that support the PictBridge system.

The CP720 comes with a tray for printing 4R, or 4 x 6-inch, sheets, though you can interchange this with a wider tray for 4 x 8-inch prints later on. Credit card-size prints and stickers are possible as well using custom paper sets. The bad news, though, is you can only use Selphy-specific paper stock and not standard photo paper, which is more of an availability issue rather than a price issue.

Printing with the CP720 takes only about a minute; that includes all the individual color passes and the final pass which laminates the print with a spill-proof, smudge-proof gloss. In addition to this front layer of protection, Selphy paper quality and ink, we’re told, can last up to a hundred years when stored in an archival album, which is more than we can say for prints done in a photo lab – not that we can confirm either claim.

In terms of picture quality, the CP720 churns out excellent reproductions and also now supports Adobe RGB. In-printer styles are somewhat limited. The CP730 is a better option in this regard.

All in all, the CP720 does its job superbly as an ultra-compact printer. This new generation gives users more options than ever and even a few luxuries for printing on the go. Vincent Coscolluela
