Have sound, will travel
How many people here have an iPod? Ok, allow us to rephrase that question. How many here have an MP3 player? Good. We thought so. Now, how many of you are craving for a portable speaker system? Well, seems like Creative’s heard your cries, and their answer is the TravelSound 200.
For something that comes in such a small package, the TravelSound 200 went beyond our expectations by belting out our tunes at a pretty good volume. While bass response was close to non-existent, that was to be expected as it uses just a pair of titanium drivers for sound reproduction. It does, however, reproduce mids and highs well. Vocals, such as those from Saint Etienne’s Hobart Paving, stood out nicely against the instrumentation.
Since the speakers were mounted close to each other, we were initially concerned about adequate stereo separation. Tech to the rescue! Creative has fitted these portables with a clever sound processor that effectively simulates a wider soundstage – and boy, does it work. Another trick it has up its sleeve is an audio normalizer, that, when switched on, ensures that all your audio tracks are played back at a consistent volume, distortion-free. Nothing bums us out more than listening to music from a busted set of speakers (even if it’s Evanescence that’s playing).

True portability means independence from AC outlets – and though the Creatives have an input plug for a power adaptor, they’re powered by four AA batteries. Playback time is rated at 25 hours on one set of alkalines, but we paired ours with Sony rechargeables, which are a cheaper alternative in the long run (especially if you have other devices that run on AAs). For those who have an attachment to umbilicals, Creative sells an AC adaptor.
It looks like Creative has a chart-topper with this speaker system. While its dynamic range may not match bigger systems, it makes up for it in both portability and versatility. And best of all, blows them away in price. - JayJ Ramos
