Tablet go
A beauty you can't hold on to
The HP 2710Pis a laptop cum tablet PC that has its sights squarely on the note-taking crowd. Its main brag of course is the 12.1 inch screen that flips, twists, and works like a regular writing surface. Using the included digital pen, the touchscreen responds only to strokes that come from the pen's tip. That means you could rest your palm on any part of the screen without accidentally pressing commands – much like writing on a piece of paper.
Handwriting takes some getting used to as the screen is rather slippery. There's also the issue of varying penmanship so your "0" might be recognized as an "O" or vice versa from time to time. Fortunately, there's pre-installed software that lets you "train" the computer for more accurate recognition.
Calligraphic prowess aside, lugging the 2710P around is the real issue here. At 1.68 kilos, it's just too heavy. If you're a nurse working 12 hour shifts, this is unacceptable.
The 2710P fortunately, has features that could save it from gadget inferno. For one, the LED light perched beside the webcam illuminates the keyboard so you can type in the dark. 3G connectivity is also present, but as of today surf packages with local telcos are virtually non-existent; it's still better to go Wi-Fi. LOVE Handwriting recognition. Nifty digital pen. LED keyboard light.
HATE No disc drive. The external accessories will set you back a few thousand more.
WE SAY If they made it lighter and included a disc drive, this could have been a breakaway winner.

The HP 2710P's digital pen works like a regular pencil. You write with one end and erase with the other. The latter however, cannot do double and right clicks and needs constant sharpening.
