Are you paranoid?
One Touch Backup, The Return, Part Two
If you're the kind of guy who looks over your shoulder when you're on a dark street, Maxtor's new line of external hard drives is a godsend. Simply plug it into your computer, and like the name says, touch the button once to back up your entire computer. Kiss paranoia goodbye.
The One Touch III 500 GB connects to your computer via any of three ways: USB 2.0 (fast), FireWire 400 (faster) or FireWire 800 (fastest). And when you're copying hundreds of gigabytes, you'll need all the speed you can get. Plugging into our PC's FireWire 400 port, we were able to backup a 120GB drive in a shade over three hours – fast indeed. Mind you, that includes the One Touch III backing itself up too. Succeeding backups were of course, even speedier, clocking in at just one hour (speeds will vary according to your connection and your usage).
Of course, if you wish, you can always use ye old drag and drop method to save files just as if you had an extra 500GB drive. What's more, you can customize the Retrospect software to back up just the files you want, when you want. The software is ridiculously easy to use, but backing up slowed down a fast computer to a crawl. Best do the One Touch shinding just before you go to sleep.
It has to be said that this particular model – the one that sports FireWire 800 – was made with Mac users in mind. One, the hard drive is formatted for Macs (FAT32). Two, only Macs support FireWire 800 out of the box. If you're a PC user with a FireWire 800 expansion, you'll have to reformat the drive and install the proper driver. Whichever one you are, your rig is sure to cost a pretty penny and maybe you won't mind the price tag. JayJ Ramos
