PDA
The simple life – easier and cheaper than ever
Palm's Z22 is a stripped down version of the popular Zire series PDAs. Aimed more for the paper planner and electronic organizer market than for anyone who's already currently using a PDA of any sort, it's got none of the usual bells and whistles – no camera, MP3 player, upgradeable memory card or high-resolution display. But it does have 32MB of memory (20MB user-usable), a color-screen, photo-viewing capabilities and organizing software basics for contacts, to-do lists, appointments and note-taking on the fly. Software extras, like a handy carb count index, check splitting calculator, shopping list and expense tracker, give you all the tools you need to cross “Get Organized” off your resolution list.
As the Z22's target market isn't techno-savvy at all, Palm's considerately made this PDA completely user-friendly. The design is clean, with no knobs or dials on the casing that could be accidentally pressed. Even the stylus fits snugly and unobtrusively – it stores away neatly so it's harder to lose. Palm's even blessed it with the non-volatile flash memory that's been standard in all Palm PDAs since the Tungsten T5 came out last year, which simply means that lola's phone numbers of Mahjong buddies won't be wiped out should she forget to keep her new favorite Christmas gift charged. The 200MHz processor also keeps applications moving fast enough so she won't bug you at all hours to fix her Palm. Help her with her first sync, show her where the HotSync button is and send her on her way. It's truly the gift that keeps on giving.

It doesn't do much, but what it does, it does well. Tech-heads and gadgeteers need not apply.

The buttons on the front are also simple and idiot-proof. Clicking on the Calendar-designated button will scroll through the various Calendar views. The five-way control button in the center of the button set allows stylus-free scrolling through contact lists and applications, which also makes the transition to PDA easier for cell phone users.
Lightweight at just over 96 grams, compact at 2.7 x 4 x 0.6 inches, efficient with its good-sized 900 mAh rechargeable Lithium ion battery and stylish with its still-popular “Apple” white casing, it's not a bad deal for only P6,900. The 160x160 resolution display is hardly noteworthy but getting all of the above at this price is. - Shiloah Matic
