Looking for the most bang for your buck?
This 2.1 multimedia speaker system should have been named Jack In The Box. As the printed specs on its packaging states, it's got 3 watts per satellite, 6 watts for the subwoofer. Flea-market price of P1,750. Definitely entry-level, with conservative, boxy looks to boot. Boy, were we in for a surprise!
It took us no amount of time to get the system set up. Satellites on either side of our monitor, subwoofer neatly tucked in a corner with a few inches' gap to allow for air movement. Hooked up the audio and the AC cord. (Hooray! No power brick!) Turned it on, and cranked the volume knob all the way up. We placed our ear right next to one of the satellites (kids, do not do this at home), and noticed minimal hiss. Did the same test with the subwoofer, and heard nary a pop. We were tempted to ask, Is this thing on?

Thankfully the unit has a blue LED that indicates all systems go, and we did our best to put the speakers through their paces. Interpol's Evil is always a good start, with a great bassline, multiple layers of instruments and distinct vocals. We set the bass level to around a third of the way, and our computer's volume at 50%. Commencing playback, we rotated the right satellite's volume knob through its range. At low to medium listening levels, the speakers gave a pretty good account of themselves sounding like a much more expensive set, in fact. Mid and high reproduction was right there, with the details in the track's composition really shining through. It was only when we really cranked towards the upper end that we noticed distortion and the lack of a really deep bottom end. Slipping in the DVD of Constantine confirmed our earlier, musical observations. We'd rather watch a film in a real theater system. We also wouldn't listen to music at full volume, for any extended period of time.
We must mention that the placement of the satellites, and the subwoofer in particular, play a big part in the listening experience. Sit in the sweet spot for best results, and don't expect much when you get up for a cup of java. Your source material, of course has to be quality. Garbage-in, garbage-out, as they say. Then again, the MMS 231's are dirt cheap, and are definitely too sweet sounding to throw away. - Agu Paiso
