LAPTOP
Now, this is a notebook
Portable computing redefined

Everything about the VAIO TX27GP has been nipped and tucked – a fine example of Japanese nano-machinery. Weighing in at a scant 2.75lbs, carrying it around is no burden at all. Its 11-inch WXGA screen may not be the smallest in the industry, nor does it boast the widest of viewing angles, but it certainly is one of the sharpest and brightest. Size aside, this notebook has all the features of a full-sized laptop, and then some: DVD burner, WLAN, Bluetooth, card reader, and Sony's very own VAIO Zone.

VAIO Zone is Sony's moniker for its multimedia front-end. A push of the dedicated button launches it, putting everything from photos to DVD movies within easy reach. Playback is smooth and detailed, and the speakers are quite loud. What really surprises though is the battery life of the TX27GP. After a full charge, the power meter gives an estimate of five hours of use with Wi-Fi enabled. That's enough for two full-length DVDs. How many laptops can boast of that?

The secret to this stamina is Intel's ultra-low-voltage CPU, which runs at 1.2GHz. While it helps to maximize battery life, it does so at the expense of computing power. Another caveat is that the TX27GP's smaller screen means that text – particularly in some websites – may be too small to read. Luckily, you can magnify the screen by hitting FN+F10.

Despite these quibbles, the TX27GP is still an impressive package, one that's wrapped up in sexy carbon fiber too. We think it's the perfect companion for the business traveler – despite its price. Hey, it's still cheaper than taking your secretary with you to that conference in the Maldives... or is it? JayJ Ramos
