It's easy to compare Sony's VAIO with Apple's notebooks, both have products that are sleek, powerful, and packed with clever features. But the VAIOs usually stumble on things that hinder them from greatness, like the boring name for example. VAIO VGN-SZ58GN/C sounds like a product code only geeks get excited about.
But beyond the cheesy label, the VAIO is a great computer with plenty of cutting edge tech. The T7700 Core 2 Duo processor and Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS video chip make Windows Vista move seamlessly. A new feature is the hybrid hard drive that buffers up to 1GB of flash memory for better performance and power consumption. Like any full-featured notebook there are also the usual goodies like Wi-Fi, fingerprint sensor, webcam, and Bluetooth.
It's all good until you're greeted by the VAIO's infamous bloatware, software Sony made to make managing the VAIO ‘easier.' So you have Vista's multitude of tools and the VAIO's own set of tools. The problem is Sony doesn't make good and intuitive software, so for a simple task like choosing battery life over performance, the VAIO offers you as much as five different choices. It's a good thing this notebook is so beautifully built. Ignore the Sony software and you've got yourself a winner. Chrissy D. Icamina
