LAPTOP
Mini for everybody
Strictly for entertainment

Unlike most notebooks that expect prime points for their ultra slim build, the Qosmio F20 decides to go the other direction. The F20 is a muscle machine with dimensions that closely resemble your DVD player. It’s a definite heavy weight at 7.27lbs. Needless to say, the “mobility” of the laptop is its greatest setback – it’s not exactly a machine that you could dub as discreet after all – but considering that it’s intended as a desktop substitute, it does its job rather well.

At first glance, it’s tough to put your finger as to which breed of users the F20 is trying to attract. But seeing the TV and AV remote control, multimedia panel, built-in TV tuner, stunning 15.4-inch widescreen, and the surround speakers with a massive (for a notebook) volume control knob, it becomes evident that the F20 is flaunting its multimedia abilities.

The built-in Harmon/Kardon speakers produce phenomenal audio quality and works well with explosive action flicks and high-adrenalin games. The notebook’s TV tuner card makes it possible for you to plug in your cable connection and watch your favorite television programs. The multimedia control panel even comes with a record button.

Compared to its multimedia super powers, the basic design is not as impressive. But the stylish pearl-white chassis and the clean paint finish are not fingerprint magnets, so smudges are minimal.

The included Nvidia 6600 chip with 128MB of VRAM is a big plus factor for those who are into superb graphics and high-def resolution. The processor, on the other hand, is a massive letdown. With a price comparative to most high-end notebooks powered by dual core technology, it’s puzzling why Qosmio hasn’t jumped onto the bandwagon yet.

The keyboard layout is compact, giving you more room for resting your palm. The keys also feel nice and solidly planted onto the notebook. The windows button is uniquely tucked on the top right side instead of keeping it in the traditional manner, so it just needs a bit of getting used to.

Overall, the Toshiba Qosmio F20 is a decent machine that’s not exactly made for your usual laptop duties. This chunky laptop may have mobility issues, but its ability to double as your digital entertainment system is a treat.
