LAPTOP
Multimedia Beast
This gigantic notebook is a deadly weapon.

The Qosmio is one expensive goliath. Toshiba is banking on the G30's sheer firepower to help potential buyers gloss over the luxury–watch price tag.

Touted as a home entertainment hub, the Qosmio does all the multimedia heavy lifting minus the sweat. It also allows you to play graphics-intensive games at a good frame-rate, thanks to its Geforce Go7600 video card. It can take any work-related stuff you throw at it, with its ample processor power and memory. Windows XP Media Center edition comes with the unit, an extremely wise choice, because you'll want to play all your media through this.

A typical day would have you watching the morning news on the built in TV tuner, recording live TV as you work, and watching a video on its glorious 17-inch HD screen. You can also connect it to a TV via HDMI, which is a notebook first. The audio is impressive, either through the harman/kardon speakers or the high-def audio output.

It has a solid build with clean, attractive lines. The shortcut buttons are plentiful and useful, with a bonus application launcher doubling the trackpad's functionality. A bevy of connection options go really far in pushing the G30 into the limelight of your connected home. If the price isn't out of your reach, this is one gadget you should get. The only time you'll be sorry is when you have to turn it down for the night. Jomike del Rosario

HATE No HDMI input. Describing it as 'big' doesn't hit the nail on the head at all.

WE SAY If you really don't take your laptop on the road, junk the desktop and laptop for this HD-DVD-playing, Guttenberg-bible sized, multimedia monster.

TOSHIBA QOSMIO G30

In detail
The G30 is the first notebook computer to come equipped with HD-DVD, which is quite slow in coming compared to how Blu-Ray has been integral to Sony's new line of premium VAIO notebooks.
