A serious step up
This ain't for the novice
You're not AN amateur, but you haven't hit pro status just yet. Somewhere in between, you're wanting the best of both worlds: a solid camera build with great features and little cash out. Canon's made something for your kind: the 40D.
Big 'n' better!
From the 30D's 2.5inches, Canon has super-sized the LCD to three inches. The increase is a welcome addition. It's bright and with big letters, it's easier to read. The body feels pretty solid compared to the amateur models which are made of plastic.
Control Freak
For those clever enough to use the 'M' mode, the two control wheels (on the hand grip and at the back) will let you adjust the shooter's speed and aperture settings with an easy spin. There are those mode dials which you can customize and switch into instantly. Canon understands photographers' peeves, tucking in the ultrasonic cleaning system. The sensor shakes up the plate to displace dirt every time you turn the cam on and off. It's a joy to know that moisture and dust won't be clinging to your battery and CF cards like jealous girlfriends with the 40D's additional sealing.
Live show
The Live View feature allows you to preview how your snaps will turn out - a good guide for color and tone conscious shooters. With the RGB histogram, you can see tones sans suffering a burn. The flip the cam mirror, to use the auto focus function. Great fun! Heidi Pascual
