The titanium standard
Top of the line and top of the heap
Canon's Ixus range has long been the gold standard for compact cameras: lightweight, solidly constructed, and easy to use. But the real reason for their popularity is their output – focus is right on target, colors are not oversaturated, and there's minimal image noise or pixelization.
So with the 960IS, it was entirely justifiable to expect all the above conditions to be met. Make no bones about it, this titanium-skinned snapper delivered, in spades. It takes but a few seconds for the 960IS to power up, ensuring that those spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities are captured. Shot-to-shot performance is quite speedy as well – even when shooting at the full, 12-megapixel resolution, thanks to the DIGIC III processor. The 960IS also has a multiple-face detecting feature – which helps keep all those drunken mugs in focus (even if you, the photographer, is half-past sober as well). Curiously though, when compared to its predecessor (the 950IS), the 960IS has a 3.7x optical zoom (as opposed to a 4x). It's a worthwhile trade off however – since the 960IS has 12-megapixels (the 950IS has a 'paltry' eight) – you can always zoom and crop using your photo editor of choice. For all intents and purposes, this megapixel upgrade is the only performance difference between the two – and honestly, it's worth the P2,000 upcharge.
So, the first paragraph of this review still holds true. There's not much fault to be found in the 960IS – that is, unless you already own a 950IS! Migs Gerardo
