CANON IXUS I5  | P25,500 |
Fashion and function reside side by side in this improved Ixus

The Ixus i5 makes things extremely simple for the technologically challenged. The controls are small but laid out well, within easy reach of the user's right thumb, and off the bat you can take decent snapshots of your dancing fiend friends at a house party. At full auto, you don't really need your brain because the camera makes all the technical decisions for you. This means that using the Ixus will still produce good snapshots even after you've downed more than your fair share of vodka martinis.

It's a pretty or handsome thing, depending on the color you pick - we pick Flannel Grey for men and Garnet for the ladies. The slick, sleek metal case begs to be caressed and will keep your camera safe in case of minor drops. You won't want to ding it, though, so do be careful - the Ixus is known for slipping from large hands. The screen, when displaying the clock, also plays the fashion plate by shifting color and orientation when you shake it, how utterly apt in today's pomosexual environment.

In terms of its performance, the Ixus i5 does not disappoint. Certainly it lacks the power and the features we've come to expect in other 5-megapixel models, such as, say, an optical zoom. You shouldn't expect so much in a camera this small and we feel that the marketing behind the Ixus works toward this effect. It directs your attention towards the mystique of the i5, rather than its capabilities. Call it "the fashionable compact camera," and say it's "mysterious and exciting," and the beautiful people buy it. Get technical and it'll attract geeks.

Five-megapixel. 1.5-inch TFT color LCD screen. 6.5x digital zoom. TTL AiAF 9-point Autofocus, AF illuminator. Built-in flash. SD card support.
A fashion statement that actually makes sense, the Ixus i5 is the life of the party.
The Ixus i5 may look like a blonde, but underneath that peroxide, is a pretty brunette wearing seductive cat-eye glasses who graduated in the top 5 percent of her class. You don't want just to look at her, you want to know her. And that's what the Menu and Function buttons are for. Push those buttons and a world of manual controls open up to you. The i5 may not let you change aperture settings but it allows you to tweak other things like shutter speed, ISO speed, and white balance. A natural blonde camera would never provide you with such options.

Conveniences include the usual shooting modes - including underwater for when you get the optional waterproof case, - direct printing so you can print out snaps without having to go through a computer, and a 9-point artificial intelligence auto focus or AiAF, which allows greater freedom in composing your shots. Shutter lag was noticeable and would probably be the biggest shortcoming of this camera.

All in all, the Ixus i5 is one beautiful camera with enough chops to please most everyday users and even some advanced amateurs. Best enjoyed with a chocolate martini in your other hand and strappy sandals on your feet. - Karlo Nilo B. Samson
