Double vision
Kodak comes out with a dual lens shocker
Press the power on and you'll delight in the Wolverine-like "snickt" of the lens cover sliding open. Considering that there's a fixed focal length 23mm ultra wide angle lens AND a 39-117mm optical zoom lens (each with its own 5-megapixel image sensor, natch), you've got to give it to Kodak for their sheer engineering prowess. The lenses offer you the chance to either take snaps of sweeping landscape vistas or use the zoom to get up-close and personal with your subjects.
The V570 offers a staggering amount of pre-set options designed for every photo situation you might encounter. In all there are 20 settings plus one for your custom preferences. We also loved the well-executed panorama stitch feature.
The movie mode isn't too shabby either. You can record full motion, 30fps, VGA-quality video until your SD/MMC runs out of space. Additionally, you can use the optical zoom in movie mode, and even switch between the two lenses while you're at it. The only downside to this is that you can hear the zoom motor during playback.
So what don't we like? The user interface was a bit clunky at first, but it really grows on you after awhile. The way the buttons are laid out makes this a camera more suited to two-handed use, despite its ultra-compact size. And while it lacks an optical viewfinder, features such as distortion compensation and a blur warning more than make up for it though.
At the end of the day, the Kodak EasyShare V570 is an excellent choice. You'll be spoiled silly with its feature-set and the dual lens system makes it seem like you're buying two excellent digicams for the price of one. Peter de Guzman
