DIGITAL CAMERA
Kodak V1073

Between the aggressive promotion of Sony and Canon, it's easy to omit the presence of the once proud Kodak. There was still a push for its products, but it was overshadowed by sexier and more feature-laden cameras from its competitors. Until now.

The most striking thing about the Kodak 1073 is its design. Its simple matte black body sets it apart from the typically shiny rivals. It feels solid, and the scarcity of buttons give it a sleek, streamlined look that makes operation simple. How few are the buttons? Try three in the back, beside the 3-inch LCD display, not including the toggle switch for the 3X optical zoom, and two buttons on top, one for power and the other for the shutter.

Kodak also enhanced the touchscreen interface. On top of of tapping on the controls and settings, you can 'flick' through the shots taken by flicking your finger left and right on the screen ala iPod touch.

A multitude of shooting modes try and predict almost every situation you might come across. For the most part it works; for example shots taken using the high ISO setting yielded overexposed areas. But if you're like most consumers, it's safe to trust the default auto mode Kodak calls Smart Capture. In this mode it performs well up to the limitations of its category, in other words it's best to shoot in bright areas. At night its lack of image stabilization (IS) becomes apparent, especially beside IS equipped cameras in its category.

For networking sites and light documentation, the Kodak 1073 is a very capable snapper, and its ability to record and display HD video makes a compelling case for it. Dinzo Tabamo

Canon's bestseller has less megapixels but makes up for it via very handy image stabilization.

Sony Cybershot W150
Less megapixels too but it has Super Steady Shot (take a hint Kodak), a more powerful zoom and it comes in different colors.
