DIGITAL SLR
Pro choice
Nikon upgrades its flagship DSLR

For a lot of us, the D2XS has just about anything you could ever ask for from a digital SLR, and then some. 12.4 effective megapixels worth of resolution, the world's fastest shutter response time and instant power-up, almost 4,000 shots on a single battery charge. And this is only a sampling of tricks up its sleeve.

This upgrade to the D2X features minor tweaks that enhance usability, such as a wider viewing angle for its 2.5-inch LCD and a faster autofocus performance, but all in all no biggie, really, and none that affect image quality directly.

The D2XS's magnesium frame is tough, reasonably light and weatherproof, so dusty terrain and drizzles aren't factors for worry. A large, 100% frame coverage viewfinder ensures what-you-see-is-what-you-get composition, and the Hi-Speed Crop mode gets you better frames per second at a still-impressive 6.8-megapixel resolution.

Aside from shooting information displayed in the viewfinder and the main LCD screen, two other screens aid in showing various settings and configurations.

With Nikon's digital-only DX lenses gaining popularity, the crop factor of the D2XS remaining at the 1.5x focal range stands as a boon for this DSLR, making it compatible with most all of the brand's lens lineup, especially the new ones.

The D2XS is capable of delivering excellent results in the most demanding of situations. Vincent Coscolluela

TECH 12.4 megapixel CMOS sensor. 2.5-inch LCD screen. 11-point autofocus. 5-8 fps continuous shooting. 158 x 150 x 86 mm. 1070g.
LOVE Excellent shooting performance. Variety of control settings and features. Exceptionally long battery life.
HATE Takes some time getting familiar with its many buttons and switches. Not many improvements from D2X.

WE SAY A pro cam in every respect, the D2XS can handle most all shooting requirements thrown at it.
