DIGITAL CAMERA
Totally tough
This must be underwater love

Tough, rugged, heavy duty, durable. These are adjectives you don't find side-to-side with sleek, elegant or stylish. If ever you do, it's usually because of the contrast between the seemingly polar opposites. But all of these descriptions apply to the Olympus 725SW. It feels solid when you grip it but it also looks like the camera your girlfriend would ask you to buy for her.

What's even more impressive is that it can take a beating. We dropped it on a wooden deck, gave it a solid whack on our desks and dragged it across a muddy puddle on the beach. It's also great for snorkeling or for fooling around in the pool with your buddies. The seals themselves don't look rugged and aren't as confidence-boosting as the metal body -which is deceiving because the camera looks sturdy enough.

Snaps are what you would expect from a quality digicam, but don't expect amazing depth, it's a point-and-shoot after all. One bonus: it takes great night portraits. Images where there's light and motion all around a smiling face are a snap to pull-off with this camera. But be careful with the offset camera lens: You might put a finger over the flash or worse, the lens itself.

The digital image stabilization is also a handy feature. It can be used while moving, in the car, or even underwater. Although it's a processing trick, it still takes usable, in-focus pictures. There's only one main dig at this camera: the supplied USB cable is proprietary. So don't lose that cable! Jomike del Rosario

OLYMPUS µ725SW

Did you know?
The 725SW has a water-resistant lens coating that beads water away from the surface? Perfect for half-in, half-out (around the time women tell us to stop and leave the room...) of the water pictures!
