DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS IR-300  | $350 [about P19,600] |
This time, the I stands for idiot-proof

This 5-megapixel snapper is Olympus’ newest addition to their Easy Imaging System range. This system makes the camera independent of a PC. In real-world terms, this means you can print or burn directly from the camera, with the help of its dock and compatible printers and drivers.

Fine, fine, but what about the camera itself? The IR-300 packs a 5-megapixel sensor in a neat, white body. The optical zoom to operate without it protruding like a you-know-what. Build quality is first-rate, despite its obvious plastic construction. The bottom latch for the battery and xD card are secured with a solid latch and spring. No premature ejections here. While we did like the intuitive navigation pad, we did find the ancilliary buttons a bit small in size. They do give a positive feel when pressed, however. What we are more concerned with, actually, is the camera mode slider, which could have been made of sterner stuff. Considering there is no way you can “quick view” a captured image, your only resort is to mash this button to the far right to browse your snaps. Viewed images on the LCD screen, however are nice and bright, even in outdoor situations. Potential buyers be warned, however, the camera does not come with a memory card – only a rather anemic 15MB of on-board RAM. We recommend purchasing at least a 128MB xD card to maximize your pleasure.

5.19-megapixel CCD. 3x optical, 4x digital zoom. 2.0" LCD. 17 preset scene modes. Super Macro mode. Movie recorder with anti-shake function.15MB internal memory. Up to 1GB xD memory expansion (card not supplied). PictBridge compatible. Docking station supplied.
Digicam virgin? Not for long, with this camera.
Concerns aside, the crisp LCD, 5-megapixel sensor, and image stabilization (in video capture mode) make the IR-300 quite capable. Images are vibrant in natural light, and while the flash may lack in range, we did find it adequate in most indoor situations. Speaking of which, the camera has 17 selectable scene modes, and a handy on-screen help menu. These not only make picture taking almost painless, but nearly idiot-proof as well. It’s a neat little package – and a neat first-time camera. - JayJ Ramos
