Meager beaver
Think twice before you plunge
There's that word again, "weatherproof". Could there be a more vague description for a gadget? Olympus should have just said that this cam is "tougher than the average cam".
Putting the adjective aside though, there's really nothing wrong with the mju 760. In fact, it works quite well: It's quick to the draw, feels solid, is light, and most importantly, it takes great snaps.
A full 7-megapixel photo taken at the beach revealed the clearest of lines. The horizon looked very sharp even with the lens back focused. Colors, too, look vivid without the slightest hint of graininess-of course, the beach is just one thing, not all photographs have the pleasure of being lit by Mr. Sun. Indoors, the usual problems ensue: lack of proper lighting would force you to opt for the always inadequate built-in flash. If you're prepared to accept the fact that you'll have to make do with light foregrounds with no backgrounds then, this camera's fine.
But going back to weatherproof. How can ordinary schmucks like us estimate a "mild" splash or a "minor" sprinkling of sand? While we appreciate Olympus' motives of building a slightly tougher cam, the moniker is just too hard to grasp in everyday situations.
It's a bit odd that Olympus maintains its weatherproof line—they have a perfectly decent series of shock and waterproof mju SWs.
And finally, the most persistent niggle: the xD card. How long before the big O calls it quits in the flash memory game? That alone is a big hindrance when it comes to their cams' take off.
The mju 760 is a terrific cam. But with its hang-ups, we'll pass this one out. E.B. Mendoza
