Subtly Super
In this age of bling and mammoth cribs, subtlety is never an easy thing to achieve. Or understand. But that is exactly what separates rookies from vets, wannabe's from the established.
The mju reeks of old world charm and tradition. Sure, its stainless steel weatherproof body and its impressive 2.5-inch LCD monitor should scream its arrival like a toddler. But it doesn't. Something about it conveys confidence.
It isn't so much its massive 8-megapixel resolution or the 20 scene modes (although that, too is great) that the 810 possesses. More noteworthy is the mju's Digital Image Stabilization (DIS) feature. DIS, they say, reduces pasma mishaps with just a touch of a little chromed button.
The mju worked flawlessly, and while the DIS took time to process images, the shakes were noticeably reduced.
Which brings us to the 20 scene modes. Olympus has considered every possible situation you'd want photographed – from candle ("warm colors are reproduced," the camera informs), museum ("no beep sound or flash"), to even documents.
All these packed in one low-key camera. Of course, upon first glance, you wouldn't really think this – the mju 810 is darn too subtle. Then again, that's the trick. Lou Albano
