DIGITAL SLR CAMERA
The new classic
Simple, suave, and shakes the shakes away

The K100D, first of the K-series models (replacing the *ist line), is the digital successor of the company's old K1000, a popular film SLR produced during the mid-70s until the late 90s. This new DSLR sports a 6.1-megapixel CCD sensor, built-in Shake Reduction, K-mount compatibility, and a 2.5-inch LCD – all for a price that's a bit cheaper than most entry-level DSLRs.

As the good old K1000 was the preferred choice for many a budding film photographer, the K100D is similarly easy to use. The simple, ergonomic, and intuitive button layout of the K100D, as well as its comfortable grip and a quality plastic frame, make for a good transition from any prosumer or point and shoot system.

The K100D's built-in Shake Reduction proves to be its strongest selling point. Beginning photographers don't usually go buying the faster, more expensive lenses once they get their DSLR bodies. Generally speaking, they're stuck for a while with the lens that comes with theirs cams – in this case, it's the small-aperture 18-55mm kit lens, which, without SR, might produce poor quality photos in low-light situations.

Upgraders will appreciate the bright, 2.5-inch LCD, SD card compatibility, on-cam editing, and the use of AA batteries (which can also be a downside, given that AA batteries die faster than their Li-Ion counterparts).

Advanced shooters, on the other hand, will benefit from the K100D's 11-zone autofocus, its ability to shoot in RAW, spot metering, and acceptable noise even at ISO 3200.

A very capable cam that's intended for beginners but can benefit advanced shooters as well, the K100D is a DSLR worthy of serious consideration.

Pixel talk
Six megapixels might seem low compared to the current 8 megapixel standard of entry-level DSLRs. However, if you plan on printing only 12x18-inch photos and smaller, then megapixel count shouldn't be a big factor for you.
