SONY CYBER-SHOT DSC-W7  | P30,999 |
This camera is brought to you by the letter W

What's Sony to do when its products are about to reach their end of life? Why, announce bigger and badder models of course! The W7 leads the W-line in Sony's scheme of things, and in that regard, we had great expectations of it.

Who wouldn't want to put the W7 on the top of their wish list? It certainly has the features that would justify its position: a 7.2-megapixel CCD, a Carl Zeiss lens, a 2.5-inch LCD, and manual settings.

We certainly weren't disappointed with the camera's performance. The Carl Zeiss optics are a perfect compliment to the CCD, and with the help of Sony's improved Real Imaging Processor, colors and details are preserved more accurately. This processor also helps improve the W7's response time - in starting up and when saving shots. The camera is capable enough when left on full-auto mode, and the AF illuminator helps ensure that you've got your subject squarely in the W7's sights. Though it comes with an ample selection of scene modes, the W7 also lets you go wild with setting up your own exposure values - with the help of the on-LCD histogram of course.

7.2-megapixel CCD. Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens. 3x Optical Zoom, up to 14x Smart Zoom, 6x Precision Digital Zoom. 2.5-inch TFT LCD. Real Imaging Processor. Manual Exposure Setting. MPEG VX Fine with Audio. AF Illuminator. USB 2.0 High Speed Transfer. Scene Selection Mode (7). Internal Memory 32MB. Conversion Lens Compatible.
This camewa wules the woost. Fow now.
We still can't get over how huge the LCD is. It's a boon to displaying essential information about your settings, and more importantly, it gives you a good idea of your shot composition and framing.

Worryingly, Sony decided NOT to include a Memory Stick in the camera package. Instead, they outfitted the W7 with 32MB of internal memory. Though it certainly beats a 16MB stick of gum any day, it still isn't much if you snap away at higher resolutions. The mandatory high-capacity Memory Stick purchase is in order. The W7 also runs on rechargeable AA's. Hurrah! These are much more flexible than Sony's proprietary InfoLithium packs, and cheaper too. Sony boasts that on a full charge, you can fire off 380 shots - highly optimistic. We managed close to 200 shots, which is nonetheless good.

What's there to NOT like with this camera? For starters, it can't save to RAW or TIFF files - but then that's the territory of the prosumer level Cyber-shot V3. Though this is a solid 7-megapixel contender, Sony's brain trust has already earmarked an end-of-life date for this ditty, with an even better successor in the works. If you ask us, we'd just say, "what the hell, give it a whirl!" - Agu Paiso
